Magic Lesson for Kids – Introducing the young ones into the wonderful world of magic

Yesterday, I conducted my first magic lesson for two kids.

Yup, I have never really taught before magic to kids other than performing shows for them. So I was initially hesitant about giving magic lessons as it is very different from performing magic for them.

However, I thought that since i have already decided to stop performing kids magic shows, i think why not conduct lessons instead to help spread the art of magic to the young ones.

One of the students already have an interest in magic so he already has quite a number of magic sets. However, there was one small problem as he needs to prepare a show to perform at his school and most of the props are either for close-up performance or too small to be seen from stage.

I thought long & hard about the lesson structure and it was quite tough as i do not know what props the kid already has and how usable they will be depending on the condition. Upon reaching the location, i had to quickly assess the props they have and construct the performance on the spot. Luckily, the kid’s mum had sent me a few images of the kits he has beforehand and I have got a rough idea of what will work.

Based of experience and using the classics of magic, I manage to cover up to 4 different performances in an almost 2 hours lesson! My students, being kids, of course were overly excited and easily distracted during the lesson but it was great fun teaching them and a learning experience for me as well. Other than teaching them the correct methods and showmanship in performance, I tried to educate them about the good habits & rules in magic ( Do not reveal the secret! & Please do not try to learn magic from Youtube!). It was mentally tiring, perhaps more so than an actual performance, but it was a great experience for me and i hope that the lesson has help to spark the kids’ interest in magic more than ever.
